Fashion Sense

If I could pick just one picture to describe my life... or at least my closet, this would be it. I wish wholeheartedly that I had some sort of fashion sense, but if you know me well you know that this is something I have struggled with my whole life. Perhaps it is not really that I don't know what is fashionable, but I struggle with #1 the money to afford such clothes, and #2 not wanting to wear clothes unless they are comfortable and functional. Growing up as a tomboy and living around boys most of my life,  I learned that unless the clothes I wore allowed me to run, tackle, slide, jump, kick, or punch, then these clothes were unfit to wear.

I no longer live in a neighborhood of boys, or have to spontaneously play roller hockey in the street, but the comfortable/functional clothing idea still remains. If I need to run, I want to be able to, if I have to sit for a long time, I want to be comfortable, if it is cold, I want to be warm, if I am challenged to a push-up contest I want to be able to drop down ( without a cleavage show ) and kick some ass. ( I know...who even thinks of that right? ).

So here is what you may see me wearing on a regular day basis...

Shoes

Pants

Shirt/sweatshirt

The complete ensemble

I know, it is far from fashionable, but it passes all my comfort/functional tests. I can run, it is comfortable to lounge in, it's warm, and I can kick ass in a push-up contest. ( Yes, I really have accomplished this task in this outfit.)

I may never be a fashionista, but I do have a bit of  an itch to change up my style somewhere in the near future. Getting mistaken for Juno MacGuff is starting to get a little old, and well...quite frankly I smell like soup and am so over Bleaker.

What are your bad fashion habits? Or, if you happen to be a fashion expert..do you have any tips?

  1. I wish I could give you tips, but I'm afraid we have very similar fashion senses. My wardrobe consists mostly of plain colored fitted t-shirts, plain colored cardigans, jeans, and converse and/or running shoes. I've been trying to mix it up a little to plain colored t-shirts of slightly different cuts. Obviously, I'm not going to be much help to you. Sorry!

I wish I could be the cute girl wearing boots and dresses and all that stuff, but I 1) Can't imagine spending the money on those clothes when I see them in the store, 2) Can't feel comfortable in them, even if they might be comfortable, and 3) Don't want to deal with the people I know commenting about how I am wearing something new.

I think the only thing that's going to force me to change my fashion habits is getting a job that makes me dress differently.

  2. I totally just LOL'd...Your clothes look like the rapture just happened! :)

I am with you. My ensemble is jeans, flip-flops (No matter the weather) and a tshirt...if its cold, maybe a hoodie...

I have NO fashion sense, and no money. Blah. I WANT fashion sense...but no. its just not there.

  3. Fashion hurts...be comfortable. I have to agree with Tina...if your fashion sense is going to change, it's because a job would have to force you in that direction. So sorry....no help. xoxo M.

  4. I can give you a little advice:)

First, you want to make sure you have a few staples in your closet: A nice pair of jeans, maybe ones you can pair with both flats and heals. A cardigan. A black dress. A scarf to mix and match with things. A simple skirt you can dress up and dress down. And a nice jacket. Once you have staples you can build around them. You can dress them up and dress them down.

Fashion doesn't have to hurt, and it doesn't have to be hard. People who seem like they dress well ALL the time simply know how to put pieces together. You don't have to have a lot of money or go shopping often. You just have to know how to mix and match. It also helps when you know what works for your body type and what doesn't.

I never pay full price for my clothes. If you know where to look and when you won't either:) Just check online sale sections often. If you go into a store ask if there will be any sales coming up. Most likely something you see at full price will get marked down. Sure it takes a bit more work and patience, but its always worth it when you're saving money.

  5. Tina- "Don't want to deal with the people I know commenting about how I am wearing something new." Oh my goodness I know exactly what you mean...I hateee those comments from friends. Of course they mean well but ugh.

Amanda- haha as long as bad fashion isn't an unforgivable sin, then perhaps this is what it will look like after the rapture :)

Margaret- Thanks so much for the advice! Looks like I need to get the staples first because all I have is jeans but it seems less complicated and overwhelming now. I wasn't sure where to start, but now I have a better idea!

  6. My bad fashion habit is the Northwest..I wear nothing but hoodies, t-shirts, jeans and Target (tar'jay) uggs. That's correct not even real name brand uggs. 2 years ago when in Dallas everything was based on appearence, I wore my collection of Steve Madden heels and had big curled hair everyday, with some sort of "wow" splash of color fashion shirt. Now my "wow" color is sadly reduced to my panties which nobody see's. :(
